I recently spent almost 6 months living and working in the shadow of the Arctic circle chasing northern lights, snow, wind and surf in a place of remote beauty.

I brought with me only an Isurus IEvade 4/3mm Hood Wetsuit.  All of the locals (10 of em or so) wore 6/5's year round with 7mm mitten gloves and booties. I was also wearing 1.5mm shorts and a thermal fleece top with 5mm booties and gloves.  I surfed during a period of 6 months (May to October) with sessions up to 6 hours, which is amazing for a 4/3. Next time I would bring a Isurus 5/4mm but I was able to hang and I surf cold- meaning I'm pretty lean and get cold easily and just would prefer to be warmer.

It definitely got cold, really cold. Above 66 Degrees Northern Latitude one day the water was around 3C (38 Degrees F) and the air well below freezing, we had good solid swell and as long I was moving I was actually warm! It surprised me and my friends who thought I was crazy for only wearing a 4/3. Most days in the summertime water was downright tropical at around 8C (Mid to High 40's)  and air from 4-12C.

I was mostly surfing but got in some epic kitesurfing days in spots few people have ever seen, let alone attempted to kite. I only brought one board a 7'2" semi gun surfboard which I used for both surfing and kiting. A little over gunned on both accounts but it got the job done.  I brought 2 kites; a 7m and 11m.

I would say Isurus was as close as a custom fit you can get in a wetsuit. Being lean and tall they have a STL size or small/ tall/ large for us lanky, tall guys. For me at 175/ 6'2" it was a little tight and tough to get into but I'm convinced it kept me warmer and really feels like a custom fit wetsuit.

Watch out for Ice Sharks in the lineup!

Gas runs about 10$+ per gallon and surf tends not to stick around very long. So when it's on double sessions are the norm. Most of the locals keep a spare dry suit to help combat the cold. I was pretty impressed with the Japanese Yamamoto neoprene rubber. It without question held less water than my old suits and even in cold conditions it dried enough in between sessions to not suck out precious energy staying warm while getting the suit back on.

The wetsuits were born and designed a stone's throw from my home in San Francisco, California and I love to represent local innovation.

In summary if you're looking for a very well made, custom fit wetsuit that will handle the elements up to 2mm above their rating you definitely should check out Isurus Wetsuits.  http://www.surfisurus.com I was more than impressed.

Hey- we've been in Iceland- doing a bit of snowkiting, surfing and backcountry skiing. Getting around to some edits. Here is from last year in Maui at Kite Beach- big fires and high winds go hand in hand- maybe the best place in the world to kitesurf? Iceland is pretty cold- we'll keep you posted on that
